NEW HANNOVER COUNTY (WWAY) – With more and more people traveling this year, many are trying to figure out what to do with their pets. With local dog hotels registering a record year, travelers who own pets can be last minute in the dog house.
“We got a lot of calls after it was booked. They’re very shocked, because they say the same about everyone else,” said Parkington’s owner, Lourdes Perez.
Those who wait until now to board their young have a “hard” time finding a facility. Many kennels have been booked for months.
“We start getting reservations around August for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is our heaviest boarding holiday.”
Some facilities have two to three page queues. Perez and Lyrech Hilt of Dog House said there has been a significant increase in limits compared to 2020.
“We usually make reservations at least 3 weeks or so in advance, but to be in the future on this is a good thing, but also, we wish we could accommodate everyone you know,” Perez said.
And Hilt continued, “Especially this year. This year, we have a very large number of boarding flights because once the CDC restrictions were lifted, everyone was very excited to get out and travel.”
Now that many are able to see their loved ones for the first time in months, Hilt thinks dog hotels have grown in popularity. The dog lover is excited about increasing business, and can’t wait to see Thanksgiving go to the dogs.
“And we really get to know dogs one by one. And what they need and what they want. And I think it adds a level of security to owning a dog. You know there are people out there who care about your dog.”
Although most places are also booked for Christmas, the Dog House still accepts reservations. Both indoor facilities recommend dog breeders as vacation alternatives.
