The witness told TMZ Sports that the quarrel started after a couple had passed but did not know what triggered the alleged altercation.

The video on TMZ appears to show Sonnen being led away in handcuffs, but law enforcement sources have told the outlet that the MMA fighter has not been arrested.

Instead, he was hit with five misdemeanor citations as police investigations continued.

Las Vegas police could not be reached for comment Sunday night, and Sonnen does not appear in inmate records.

Sunin last fought in 2019, when he lost to Yoto Machida.

But the 6’1“, 205-pound fighter had a career record of 29-15-1 that included distinguished victories against Rampage Jackson, Shogun Rua, Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping.

Understanding the Nevada Criminal Process

In Nevada, not all criminal cases begin with a traditional arrest, as Las Vegas DG Defense Group explains on its website.

“If the case is simple enough, the police will usually issue a ‘warrant’ with a date to appear in court and respond to the charge,” district attorneys said on the website.

In other cases, the police may waive the arrest by asking the court to send a ‘summon’ to the suspect asking him to appear in court to answer the charge.

“Depending on the charge, the suspect may then have to ‘pass through’ prison. This happens when the defendant is formally booked but released the same day pending the outcome of the case.

“Nevada courts may resort to citations and subpoenas in cases where the suspect is not considered a flight risk and there is no immediate necessity to keep him or her in custody.”

While a misdemeanor citation is less serious than a felony charge, it can still lead to imprisonment, fines and a criminal record, according to the Las Vegas Criminal Defense website explanation.

After further investigation, the attorney general may decide to bring more serious charges.
